Breeding:

We are very excited to offer our very first litter out of our maiden dam, Benelli (daughter of HOPE) paired with Cash's Single Barrel Jack.

Benelli is a great-grandaughter of Hank from "Hunting with Hank" and is of Advie & Dashing Bondhu lines. Being the daughter of Advie Tuck, she is extremely birdy and loaded with natural field instincts. She is heavily ticked Tri-Belton colored setter and has the potential to produce great coloration in her litters from white/orange, to tri-colors and chestnuts. Can't wait to see what these two excellent dogs produce. Benelli has been certified as OFA GOOD and CERF certified Clear!

Jack is also from Dashing Bondhu lines although not related to "Hank". He has spent a lot of time training in the fields this spring and summer and has turned into a hunting machine. He is currently working with a professional trainer toward his Master Hunter's Certificate and the plans are to officially try for it this fall.  Jack has been OFA certified GOOD and CERF certified Clear!

Check out this litter's PEDIGREE.

Personality Profiles

Nipsy-5w_04.jpg Nipsy - A very sweet and gentle pup with soft doe eyes that will steal your heart. This little sweetie doesn't let much bother her and appears to be very even tempered and gentle natured with a soft personality that will surely please her new family.
Nash-5w_05.jpg Nash - One of the most animated pups, he's all over the place exploring and checking stuff out and is quick to pounce on a littermate in the fashion of Nala on Simba in The Lion King. As with the rest of the pups, he is also very people oriented and readily comes for some attention and snuggle time.
Nelli-5w_08.jpg Nelli - What a little punkin'! This little gal is not only adorable but she is very personable too. She's got a great attitude and is very explorative in nature, but readily checks in with me for some attention.
Newt-5w_03.jpg Newt - What a cutie-patootie! This little guy will capture your heart with his sweet and gentle nature.  He plays well with his litter mates and is not a bully, but can stand his ground when being picked upon.
Nola-5w_04.jpg Nola - This little gal is a "go getter" and always on the move. She's explorative and not afraid to check out every knook and cranny of the room and her momma's kennel with her nose to the ground and tail wagging rapidly the entire time.
Nikko-5w_06.jpg Nikko - This little guy is just funny, if animals can have a sense of humor it sure shows in Nikko.  He is very animated and jumps and whirls all over the place when he's playing, barking and yipping to get your attention but on the flip side can be very mild and sweet and the most docile little cuddler. What an all-around great little guy.
Nitro-5w_04.jpg Nitro - This guy's name is very fitting, he's a bold pup with lots of drive and attitude, one of the first to get into things and sniff it out. He was the first to find the water bowl and take a drink. Even with his bold attitude this guy does not seem to be a dominant type or a bully and plays well with his littermates.
Nugget-5w_01.jpg Nugget - the most personable of the female pups, she is the first to hop up and respond to my voice and the first after suppertime to come see me and check in for some lovins. She is quite the snuggler and is happy being held on her back in my arms and babied. She is very responsive to my voice and wants to kiss and lick my nose in response.

Web Log (Litter N):  (from most recent at top)

Week 6

Monday, November 24th, 2014

The two tribes have merged, says I in Survivor-ish jargon.  They (meaning the remaining Litter M and N pups) are all now snug as bugs in a rug out in the Puppy Cottage.  Since there are only three Litter M pups left (Maverick, Mowgli and Milo), I figured the Litter N pups wouldn't be so overwhelmed by the bigger pups because they have the majority. Now that both momma dogs are done nursing, the only issue was whether or not the larger pups would trounce on the smaller ones.  So far, so good.

When I first considered combining the two litters, this morning I brought Maverick into the house from the cottage and put him in with Litter N,  he was a bit overwhelmed by the flood of attention from the smaller pups and looked a little forlorned, you know the look, big sad eyes and all.  Momma Benelli wasn't too keen on the issue though and growled and snapped at him for being there, so I realized that she needed to be removed from the situation immediately.  Once the overprotective momma figure was removed things went well.  That's when I decided to try a complete merge to the playpen in the puppy cottage..

I captured a video of the merge, and have posted to YouTube, video entitled "The Tribes Have Merged". ENJOY!

Week 6 puppy portraits have been posted, ENJOY!

Week 6: This week's milestone - Eye color changes from blue to gold or brown
This is the week that the puppies eyes will make the transition from their baby blues to their adult color. All the tri-chestnut pups will have golden yellow eyes and the tri-color black pups will have deep amber to brown colored eyes as adults. The orange pups will have amber eyes.

Week 5

Saturday, November 15th, 2014

Weaning is going well, the pups are now completely on solid food and I am done mixing the canned food in to entice them to eat. They all have fantastic appetites and love their kibble. I'm feeding Native 3 Puppy now because Litter M told me that it's preferrable over the Earthborn Puppy Vantage that I had been feeding.  If given the choice between their Earthborn and their momma's Native, they'd choose Native everytime.  So the next time I went to the farm store to buy dog food, I checked to see if Native had a puppy formula and they've just started to carry it instock.  Lucky for my babies because they really mow down on it.  It helps make weaning much easier.

It's PUPPY SELECTION TIME! I know there are several of you out there that are anxiously waiting to know which puppy will be coming home soon.  I have posted puppy Personality Profiles in order to help make that difficult decision easier.  Please send me your first and second choice puppies and why you've chosen them so we we can begin the selection process.  You are welcome to choose a pup based on my descriptions and the photos, or if you want more information you are welcome to call me to discuss.

A new statistic has been added to the pups tables above for "Status", this will indicate Reserved, Available, or Pending for each pup.  Once a puppy has been selected, the status will change to reserved.  We do have some puppies still available out of this litter, so after the people who have reservation deposits have chosen their pups, the remaining ones will be marked available and sold on a first come first served basis. In the event someone wants an available pup and have committed to sending a reservation deposit, the status will show as Pending until the deposit is received.

Week 5: This week's milestones - Puppy Socialization / Puppy Selection Week

Pups will belong to a new family! At the start of this week, the puppies belong to Hickory Hollow, but by the end of the week, they will belong to a new family! Even though they won't know it yet, most will have been spoken for by their new puppy parents and in a couple weeks will get to go to their new homes. Now that the pups are old enough to have visitors, they will have lots of opportunities for socialization with our big dogs, adults and children. We will also concentrate on acclimating them to noises of all varieties during "percussion sessions" where they will endure rapping on pans, opening and closing of doors, music on the radio, and whatever else I can think of to condition them for life after Hickory Hollow.

Week 4

Monday, November 10th, 2014

Weaning is going very well, the pups have graduated from goat's milk and rice cereal mixed with canned food, to canned food mixed with soggy dry kibble.  They now whine to tell me when they're hungry and when set around the dinner pan, they all eat with gusto. Also, an interesting thing I noticed, while Benelli is standing to nurse, she will regurgitate her breakfast for the puppies to eat, just like a female canine in the wild would do. She has just started doing this over the past few days and I'm sure it's an instinctual part of the natural weaning process, however  I don't recall ever seeing HOPE do this with her pups.  Just shows what a good momma Benelli is.

The puppy playpen in the house has been working out well so far, I just hope it holds up for a few more weeks.  Litter M is starting to go home now, so once the Puppy Cottage clears out these little guys may be able to spend some time out there before they are ready to go to their new homes.

Monday, November 10th, 2014

Hi All, Puppy Selection is rapidly approaching and so I wanted to start posting puppy Personality Profiles.  WOW is this a difficult task, and I say that because all the pups are all so great, it's difficult to pick out a few traits that set them apart at this point.  They are all very energetic and personable and want your attention when you come into the room. I really don't think you could go wrong with any of them. What it may boil down to is which puppy photo touches your heart the most.

Friday, November 7th, 2014

Just posted Week 4 puppy portraits and will be evaluating individual personalities soon in anticipation of puppy selection coming up next Wednesday!

Today when I was taking a closer look at all the pups to try and determine how much ticking they will have (ticking predictions now posted under pup stats), I noticed that Nelli's orange color is much lighter than the rest of the orange pups and the colored ticking on her belly are large spots, but are very faint in color.  I've been wondering about her for a while now, but today a realization hit me.  Could she really be a rare lemon belton?? Hmmm, something to ponder at least... only time will tell.  Oh how I love genetics, simply fascinating!

Thursday, November 6th, 2014

The pups were rapidly outgrowing their 4x4 whelping box, so my Johnny love built the pups a 4x8 playpen, thus doubling the size of their living quarters.  Usually at this time the pups would go out to the puppy cottage to spend the rest of their time here at Hickory Hollow, however Litter M has taken up residence in the cottage and those pups are two weeks older.  That is too big of a difference in development to merge the two litters at this point.  Those pups are getting reallly big, are very energetic, strong and play rough, they would tromp on these little guys and that wouldn't be a good mix. Therefore they will reside in the house in this temparary structure.

To prep the room, first we laid down plastic tarps on the floor, then a rubber truckbed mat went on top of that.  Then the plywood playpen walls were built on the rubber flooring, then the pups were bedded down with pine shavings, just like Litter M has out in the Puppy Cottage.  I took a video of the pups when they were first put into their new playpen and posted to YouTube.  Watch now! ENJOY :0)~

Week 4: This week's milestone - Rough Play / Weaning Begins

I am no longer weighing puppies on a daily basis now, however I will still weigh them weekly.

Right now the pups are so sweet and gentle and when they come to see you they are snuggly and want to be held and get some attention. For the most part, they like to crawl into your lap and go to sleep. In a few days, this will all go away and they begin to become little monsters (lovingly referred to of cours). They will bite everything they can get their little mouths on including fingers, toes and their favorites... shoelaces! As their little personalities continue to emerge this week, I will be posting puppy personality profiles in preparation for puppy selection starting next Wednesday.

Week 3

Saturday, November 1st, 2014

I've got LOTS of fun upates for you all today and hope you realize I've been super busy working very hard to entertain you guys, LOL!!

First thing this morning when I went in to visit the pups, they were milling around the box with excitement to see me and were pretty animated, so I caught the LIVE ACTION on video and uploaded to YouTube.  It's pretty fun to see how well the pups are getting around the box these days and hear their little voices when they bark and cry out.

When I took the pups out of the box this morning so that I could clean it and replace the carpet floor, I noticed a few of them licking their momma's food dish, so I thought I would try an introduction to cereal today. If they are ready, why wait?  So, I mixed some warm goat's milk with Gerber Baby Rice Cereal and let them go to town.  They really got the hang of it quicky for being so young. I recorded the entire First Cereal Experience on video which I have also uploaded to YouTube for your viewing pleasure.

I also published Week 3 Puppy Portraits, miscellaneous litter photos from Week 1 and Week 2 as well as some more LIVE Puppy Cam snapshots.  ENJOY :0)~

Friday, October 31st, 2014

I uploaded a new video entitled Milkbar Mania to YouTube this afternoon.  I went in to visit the litter and I couldn't resist this camera angle for an up-close-and-personal nursing video of Litter N.  The pups are getting so big!

Thursday, October 30th, 2014

I've got some pretty fun color updates for the pups today.  Now is the time when the third color (if any) on tri-colored dogs starts to show up in certain predictable areas on their bodies (called points).  These areas are brows, cheeks, underneath side of the ears around the edge of the flap,  base of tail, and on all legs. SO... during weigh-in today, I noticed tan ticking on a few of the pups legs, and also noticed that Newt's spots are much lighter than the other confirmed chestnut pups, so I am now updating these coat colors as follows:

Pup Name From To
Nipsy Chestnut Belton Tri-Chestnut Belton
Nash Blue Belton Tri-Belton
Newt Chestnut Belton Orange Belton
Nikko Chestnut Belton Tri-Chestnut Belton

I think these color predictions are going to stick this time!

Week 3:  This week's milestones - Introduction to solid food / Play behavior

This is my absolute favorite time with the pups.  Their eyes and ears are almost open and they are becoming playful and inquisitive about their surroundings. Their individual personalities begin to develop and they will begin to do some of their natural doggy behavior for the first time. Their skin is freckled enough that we will be able to tell how much ticking the pups will have as adults.

Week 2

Monday, October 27th, 2014

During weigh-in today, I checked the pups over pretty thoroughly and noticed their ear canals are not open yet, but are deepening nicely so it won't be long before they are affected by noises around them.  I also noticed that their baby teeth can now be seen below the gumline and look like little pirahna teeth which will be cutting through very soon.

Pups had their first worming today.

Friday, October 23rd, 2014

Pups had their first nail trim today, their little claws were like little hooked needles and were catching on the carpet. Most times the pups don't resist that task at this age and tolerate it without difficulty, it's when they are older that they don't want to sit still for grooming.

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014

Puppies are now taking steps regularly and are still wobbly when walking, but at least are getting those bellies up off the floor a bit. Benelli is still a very protective mom, but doesn't seem as nervous when puppies whimper as she was in the beginning.

Week 2: This week's milestone - Cutting Teeth / Ears will open

Most of the pups have their eyes open by now.  They will be able to see clearer and clearer each day, starting with shadows for the first few days until their eyes can focus on specific objects. This will be a fun week and we are looking forward to having the puppies notice us when we come into the room and come over to the edge of the box to greet us. This week's milestone, although not as noticeable as the eyes opening, but just as significant for the pups, are that their ear canals will be opening. Later this week the pups will be noticeably affected by the sounds around them.

Week 1

Tuesday, October 21st, 2014

Here's today's eye opening update:

1 Nipsy Both 1/2 5 Nola Both 3/4
2 Nash R 1/2 L 1/4 6 Nikko R Open L 3/4
3 Nelli Both 3/4 7 Nitro Both 1/2
4 Newt Both 1/2 8 Nugget Both 1/2

Puppies are now finding their voices and are starting to bark and growl. It's too funny hearing a little puppy utter a rolling growl when you are petting it.  Also pups are starting to get up off their bellies and take their first steps instead of scooting across the floor on their bellies.

This morning when I was doing the daily weigh-in on each pup, I noticed that the eyes are starting to open!! Here's how they are shaping up from the start:

1 Nipsy Not started yet 5 Nola Both 1/4
2 Nash Not started yet 6 Nikko Not started yet
3 Nelli L 1/2 R 1/4 7 Nitro Both starting
4 Newt Not started yet 8 Nugget Both starting

Also, I am officially changing the coat color for Newt again from orange belton to chestnut belton.  The spot around his eye is coming in darker than the orange coloration on other pups, so I now believe he's chestnut.  Time will tell and I may end up making more color change obervations in other pups as well.

More color pUpdates!  I am officially changing the body marking maps for Nipsy and Nikko to Chestnut Belton and Nash to Blue Belton.  Of course these are my early best guesses and may be updated again later, but this is how I think things are shaping up.

Week 1 Puppy Portraits are now posted!  Just see how those little pink noses have changed and now have spots!

Week 1: This week's milestone - Eyes will open

During this week, the pups will reach an exciting milestone; their eyes will be starting to open, probably around October 18th or 19th, hopefully before they turn 2 weeks old. Right now, their eyelids are fused together but there is a crease that defines the upper from the lower lid. As their eyes start to open the crease starts to deepen and separate starting at the corner of the eye by the tear ducts and working across the eye until they are completely separated. The opening process can take 2 or 3 days from the first peek of the glistening eyeball beneath to being able to entirely see those beautiful baby blues. Once their eyes are open, the precious little babes take on a whole new personality.

Oh pups are doing so great!! They are all plump little piggies and are getting around the box so much faster now.  Boy can they zero in on momma's location even though they are still blind.

Upon further scrutiny of pups colors, I am officially changing the body marking maps for Nelli, Newt, Nugget AND Nitro.  I have confirmed that Nitro is a tri-belton!!  The other pups are still TBD, there is not enough coloration yet to tell anything.

Oh my!! Spots are starting to come in now, it shouldn't be too awful long until we can tell what color ticking the pups will develop.  I'm already thinking a few of the pups at least can be labeled as Orange Beltons, namely Nelli, Newt and Nugget, but don't hold me to that.  I will update the marking diagrams as I know more.

I have a wonderful report this morning! All pups are doing great at this morning's weigh-in, everyone gained a good amount of weight and all seem plump and healthy in my hand.  I am thankful for that after yesterday's weigh-in.

The area where the dew claws were removed does not show any inflammation and has scabbed over nicely.  This is one of my biggest worries for the pups being so young since the removal of a toe is a significant "injury".  Everyone is doing very well in that regard too.

This morning I'm a little concerned to see that a few pups have lost weight since the last weigh-in.  Benelli spends all her time with them, but appears a few are not getting enough time at the milkbar.

Luckily, I stocked goat's milk in the fridge a little while back, so I prepared a baby bottle full of warm milk so I could bottle feed.  I use human baby bottles for the pups, namely Playtex VentAire with a Stage 1 nipple (small hole). Stage 1 is perfect and they can really suckle hard and get a good amount of milk without choking. I also like that the bottle is angled to help keep milk toward the nipple. When they get a little larger, I can switch to a Stage 2 nipple which will allow a little more milk flow.

Speaking of underweight... Pregnancy has taken it's toll on poor little Benelli too.  She was not eating well for about the last couple weeks of her pregnancy and lost some weight herself.  Luckily she has her appetite back now so I am feeding her about every four hours or so.  She's getting canned food (Taste of the Wild - High Prairie and Wetlands) mixed with Native 4 to give her extra calories for herself and to help feed her litter.  She LOVES it!!  She's getting so spoiled she's not going to want to go back on her regular diet once she's done nursing.

Dew claws were removed today.

Benelli is starting to get the hang of being a first time mom although she is a little nervous and ultra-protective of her babies. When I took one away this morning long enough for the daily weigh-in, she wanted the pup back immediately, almost to the point of trying to physically take it away from me with her mouth.  She is also very whiney and somewhat frantic when the pups are crying, like she doesn't know what to do with them to calm them down.  There was one "lost" pup this morning, who was crying because he found himself out in the corner by himself and she tried to pick him up in her mouth to bring him back closer to her.  HOPE never mouthed a pup ever, so this is different for me to witness.  HOPE will roll the pup around and push it across the box with her nose to get it where she wants it.  I'm sure confidence in caring for her litter will come with time, but right now she's a "Nervous Nelli".  I have to reassure her a lot that she's doing good and help her calm her pups by placing them with her when they are "lost".

All pups are doing great at this morning's weigh-in, everyone gained a good amount of weight and all seem plump and healthy in my hand.  I am thankful for that.

BEHIND THE SCENES:  Supervising the Photo Shoot.
While trying to take Litter N's first puppy portraits this afternoon, the uber-protective momma Benelli had to wedge herself between me and her pup, and for almost every shot I had to hold her back, otherwise her nose would've been in every single photo.

Benelli woke me up at 4:00 am with the urgency to go outside (which is normal at this stage in her pregnancy with whelping so near).  When she came back in she was resting comfortably and didn't seem to be in any more distress for a while.  I have not seen any labor contractions as of yet...

Update 11:30 am:  Benelli is done resting comfortably, she is now pacing rapidly, whining, and is a little shaky. I'm hoping this means that labor contractions will begin soon.

Pups are coming!!

Being a first time mom, it took Benelli a little bit for her natural mothering instincts to kick in. After the first pup was born she didn't understand what was going on or what to do, so I took care of everything; got the water sack off, cleaned the head and cleared the nose and throat of fluid and rubbed the pup to dry the coat until it started breathing and writhing with life.  When pups are born they are kinda greyish in color, and it's neat to watch them pink up as the oxygen starts flowing through their system.

Benelli just laid next to me and watched as I clamped off the umbilical cord and cut off the placenta as her pup squirmed and screamed in my hands.  I let the placenta lay on the floor next to her wondering if her instincts would kick in.  I know it sounds gross, but momma dogs usually eat the placenta because it is instinctual. They say that it provides nourishment and other health benefits to the momma dog as well.   Before I was even done cleaning, weighing and charting birth stats on the first pup, the second pup was born!  I handed off the first pup to my whelper helper (aka Johnny) so he could finish recording pup #1 stats while I tended to pup #2.

Same thing for this pup, Benelli just laid next to me and watched as I clamped and cut the umbilical cord and again let the placenta rest on the floor while I tended to cleaning up the pup and getting it to breathe. As I was doing that, she started to eat the placentas I had left on the floor,  I was relieved to see the natural instincts kick in.  When the pups were all cleaned, weighed and stats recorded, I put them on momma to nurse. She allowed that and just watched them do their thing.

By the time pup #3 was born, she was helping to pull the placenta out as I was working on the pup and ate it as I was still drying the pup. This time she chewed off the umbilical cord herself and I didn't have to clamp and cut it.  After that, she handled the unbilical cords and placentas without trouble.

WOW! Look at all those belton coated pups!! I guess that really shouldn't surprise me since Benelli is also a belton. So many white coats makes it hard to tell them all apart, but to make the daily weigh-ins easier, I have marked the tips of the tails with non-toxic paint so that I know which is which.  I guess that makes their body markings diagrams super easy too!

Now we will just have to wait and see what color ticking they will all have. The possibilities are tri-belton, orange belton, chestnut belton, and tri-chestnut belton.  We will all have to just wait and see...

First litter photos have been posted on Facebook and will be uploaded to this page some time in the near future.

Well, I think Benelli's timing is right on schedule!  This morning's temp was 98.9 and we are waiting for it to hit 98.4 or lower.  Her temp this past week has been hovering at 99.8 degrees, so it has dropped a whole degree.  I will be taking her temp every couple hours or so to confirm, but I think this is the temperature drop we've been waiting for.  Pups will be here soon!

October 2nd, 2014

Yesterday I started taking Benelli's temperature twice daily to monitor her for whelping next week.  She is alreadys showing some of the tell-tale signs of being close, those being that she is not eating as much food in the mornings as usual, going outside to potty more frequently, and I can feel the babies moving around in her belly when I place my hand on her.  I always compare whelping day to Christmas because each puppy is such a gift and a fun surprise as to the color and gender of each precious one.  And this year Christmas is coming around again more quicky than in a normal year... Oh yeah... the first iteration of "Christmas" was Litter M only a week ago!

Today I discovered a nice benefit to having Benelli's litter due a couple weeks after HOPE's litter. One of HOPE's puppies is very tiny and after three days of not gaining as much weight as I'd like her to and HOPE not having enough milk for extra nursing sessions for her I noticed that Benelli's milk has already come in! So, I put HOPE's pup Morgan, on Benelli and let her get her fill.  Benelli allowed it and it worked out great! Not sure momma HOPE felt the same way due to her desperate yips from the nursery telling me she wasn't happy I stole a puppy and disappeared with it, but it's really all for the best.  Hopefully that will be the boost Morgan needed to start gaining at normal rate and if not, I will let Benelli nurse her again.

In the meantime, while Morgan was nursing, I noticed that I could see Benelli's puppies squirming in her belly. It won't be long now until those little babes enter this world.

September 22, 2014

Benelli's belly is swelling up quite a bit these days, confirming in my mind that she is indeed pregnant.  I have increased her food intake to 1.5 times her normal ration during the gestation period.  So now I'm preparing Hickory Hollow to handle two litters at once (Litter M will be on the ground at the time that this litter is born) and I've never done two at the same time before.  Since this will be the case, I'm trying to decide what to do with the LIVE Puppy Cam since I can only have one litter online for viewing at a time.... Hmmmm.

September 7, 2014

I am pretty sure Benelli is pregnant so I have decided not to do a pregnancy ultrasound and just wait until 8 weeks gestation to do an x-ray to get a pup count. Stay tuned!  Pups should be due around Oct 9th.

We had another lock-up today, it seems the pair is doing well and as we had hoped!

After becoming aquainted with Jack over the past several days, we finally had our first successful breeding between the pair! YEAH!!

Benelli was dropped off in Fort Madison to get acquainted with Jack in hopes that they will breed for the first time next week.  Keep your fingers crossed,  as last time Benelli met Jack she was not friendly towards him.  Hopefully this time will be different.
